Joey Scouts

Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouts for young people aged 5 to 8, and it’s all about discovery and excitement! Joey Scouts are part of a Unit, led by a Joey Scout Leader.

Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings and singing songs together, all Joey Scouts develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them.

Joey Scouts learn how to share and care, and help other people. They also learn how to recognise native birds and animals, and develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment. Some Joey Scouts might even get the chance to have their first sleepover with their Unit, an important and fun ‘first’ for developing independence.

A trained Joey Scout Leader guides a Joey Scout Unit. The safety of all Joey Scouts is very important, which is why there are always leaders on hand during all activities.

Friendship & Belonging

Making new friends and building social skills are very important for Joey Scouts. For some, belonging to Joey Scouts provides an opportunity to mix with a new group of people, developing their confidence and ability to make new friends. Joey Scout families are welcome to get involved too! There’s lots of opportunities for the whole family to make new friends and feel part of the community too.

Adventure

Joey Scouts is often the first chance for young children to have a real adventure, like their first abseil, a visit to the local fire station, or even their first overnight camp!

Leadership

Even from 5 years of age, Scouts begins to show young people how to lead by giving them the chance to play an active role in their program. They discuss the activities that Joey Scouts would like to do, and provide guidance that will enable a degree of independence and teamwork. As an example, individual Joey Scouts are encouraged to lead games for their Unit, making sure that everyone is included.

Uniforms and Badges

Joey Scouts wear a blue polo shirt with brown sleeves and a scarf. They will also be given badges to sew on the uniform. Joey Scouts will be able to earn a number of badges as they progress through the section.

When you first talk to the Joey Scout Leader about joining, they will give you information about what to wear and bring to your first meeting. You can buy your Joey Scout uniform at Scout Shop.
